I'll be honest, I had to pick-up my girlfriend in San Clemente, we were both starved and started driving down El Camino Real when I spotted Hapa J's. Was not sure what type of food they served, but decided to give it a try.
We were happily surprised to find out it was Hawaiian (I've been a follower of Sam Choy for over 20 years).
My girlfriend ordered the Loco Moco while I had Uncle Roberto's Short Rib Torta sandwich.
Back in the '80s, I used to go to Kehei, Maui where we used to buy short ribs at Azeka's Market, take them back to the house and BBQ them. They were so good, I'd freeze 20 lbs. of them and bring them back to the mainland.
I have to say that this is the first time since then I have had short ribs that instantly transported me back to Maui! The flavor was amazing, cooked to perfection! And short ribs in a sandwich -- I was in heaven.
This was our first... but is definitely not our last time to eat at Hapa J's (and we're telling all our friends to try it, too, when driving by San Clemente).
Also, the staff was great -- service with a smile!
You guys made my day!
